Annual Ox Roast

This Sunday, June 1
OX ROAST
Sonoma Plaza
music · food · wine · beer · fun for the whole family
11am-5pm

$10

Tell your family and friends, it’s almost time for the 41st Annual Ox Roast! Ox Roast 2008 takes a saucy turn this year with the addition of a “Sauce Your Ox” competition. This new competition was cooked up by food bosses Steve Jones and John Kelly who thought it would be fun to pair the traditional roasting of the beast with a contest pitting sauce makers against one another and letting the public decide who best sauces their ox.

All you need to do to participate is come down to the Sonoma Plaza on Sunday, June 1, from 11:00a.m. until 5:00p.m., buy a plate of Ox Roast, choose your sauce, and cast your vote!

To best capture the essence of this year’s event, the Sonoma Community CenterOx Roast 08 asked artist Elizabeth Tashman to create the 2008 Ox Roast poster artwork.  Elizabeth studied painting and printmaking in school and spent her early career as a textile designer.  Her continued interest in textile design informs her Ox poster, with its repetition of shape and color.

Elizabeth Tashman began her association with the Community Center when she moved to Sonoma in 1999, teaching summer art camps until she became a full-time art teacher for Sonoma Charter School in 2002. She has become a pivotal SCC faculty member as SCC builds its teen art program, where she will teach printmaking, encaustic, and old furniture refinishing.  She once again will teach SCC summer art camp program in 2008.  T-shirts featuring the Ox Roast artwork will be available for sale on June 1.

Meal tickets for Ox Roast will be available for purchase in advance at the Community Center. Ox plates are $10. Proceeds from Ox Roast benefits the arts and cultural programming of the Sonoma Community Center.

For more information and to purchase Ox Roast tickets, call the Sonoma Community Center at 938-4626, ext. 1 or e-mail us at scc@vom.com or visit our website at www.sonomacommunitycenter.org.

Aiden O’Reilly

Aidan O’Reilly was born in San Francisco in 1985. He has been working in the theater since he was eight years old and has performed on stages in England, Scotland, Switzerland and the U.S. He recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London where he received his BA in Acting Studies. When he was fourteen he started his own acting company, The Renegade Players, with his friend Sacha Szwarc. Their first project was a production of Cabaret which scandalized his local high school faculty so much that the Renegade Players were banned from performing on campus. Since then they have produced many other productions including  an original piece, Blasphemous Filth, a comedy about the Apocalypse written by Aidan O’Reilly and Sacha Szwarc. O’Reilly’s last project was the sold-out production of Macbeth at the Sonoma Community Center last fall. Louise Erdrich’s mesmerizing new novel, her first in almost three years, centers on a compelling mystery: the unsolved murder of a farm family in small-town Pluto, North Dakota. The Plague of Doves is one of the major achievements of Louise Edrich’s considerable body of work, a quintessentially American story and the most complex and original of her books.

High Road to Doomsday

A One-Man Show with
Jeff Falconer
Friday,
May 30 and Saturday, May 31
8:00 p.m.
$15

High Road to Doomsday is a tragi-comic exploration of the Human Condition, full of music, loving satire, dark humor, and stubborn optimism. The tone of the show is mock-scholarly, with additional tips of the satirical hat to evangelical preachers and self-help luminaries. Think Joseph Campbell, Wayne Dyer and Jimmy Swaggert stranded on a desert isle with just one microphone.

Jeff Falconer calls his approach “loving satire” because he himself has
been, or is, guilty of all the human excesses and foibles he lampoons. Jeff
has been an active performer for most of his life and loving satire peppers
his three solo CDs, as well as a fourth with longtime collaborator Dennis
Cordellos. High Road to Doomsday is Jeff’s first one-man show.  Jeff is
married and lives in Sonoma Valley, California.

Sonoma Valley Health Care Coalition is having a party and you’re invited

The Sonoma Valley Health Care Coalition is having a party and you’re invited.

WHEN:  Sunday, June 3 (that’s THIS Sunday)
TIME:    12 – 4 PM
WHERE:  On the Plaza
WHY:  Because our work is done!

The Coalition issued it’s final report, made it’s presentation to the Board and is having copies of the report prepared to go out with both papers soon, so it’s time to celebrate! (whether you like the outcome or not — it’s done and we’re celebrating!)

We’ve decided to celebrate in conjunction with the OX ROAST on the Plaza on Sunday.  There will be Food, Drink, Music nearby — and we couldn’t have done a better job organizing such a celebration.

We’re all meeting on the SouthWest corner of the Plaza, just south of the new Duckie Pond.  It’s a do-it-yourself pot luck with the main course being OX, (slabs of ox or ox sausages, and maybe even a vegetarian option) courtesy of the OxRoast!

You can purchase the various Ox Plates to support the Community Center, but let’s jazz it up by bringing something that you might like to share with others, food or drink-wise.

I think  that in this part of the Plaza there aren’t any tables, so bring your most fun picnic blanket or quilt, a some dinnerware and  eatin’ and drinkin’-ware might be nice, in case you decide to partake of someone’s pot luck dish — there might be some fancy desserts, any closet pastry chefs out there?  With all day Saturday and most of Sunday to make some great dishes, there might be some good food to supplement the OxRoast fare.

Bring your significant other, children, grandchildren, even great-aunt bessie, if she’s in town and make this our last fling to say goodbye to the weekly Monday meetings and celebrate the work we’ve done together.

If you feel like kicking it up a notch and bringing your frisbee or other urban toys, why not?!

So, that’s the best we can do for this fond farewell get together.  Plan to be there Sunday, June 3 between 12 and 4, though the OxRoast goes from 11-5 with music all day and  the best music (in my opinion) coming from 3 – 5 Gator Beat will be playing on the main stage.

Save me some of the Fancy Desserts and Good Wines, I’ll be coming from my Sunday Marin Farmer’s Market, and won’t get there til 3-ish!  Too Bad!

No need to RSVP… Just show up with your party pot luck dish and blanket or quilt — you’ll fit right in!
