Update from Sonoma Garden Park

Greetings from Sonoma Garden Park!

An overdue update and our “Wish List” at the bottom of this email. Thanks!

Sonoma County Master Gardener Susan Angell has been leading the way for several projects bringing Master Gardeners together with youth at the Garden Park. Susan, along with fellow Master Gardeners Melissa Horton, Cathy Williamson and Nancy Pollack are teaching soil maintenance, composting techniques, planting and basic gardening skills to kindergarteners, teens from VOM Teen Center and children attending Summer Camp this July at the Garden Park. We are thrilled about this new collaboration and welcome their expertise.

Fruit Tree Pruning Success!

I am pleased to announce that practically all of our fruit trees (over 100) have been pruned this year, thanks to the efforts of several volunteers. Many thanks to David Wenzel, Andrew Goldstein, Peter Moras, Angela Casazza, Steen Berrig, Chris Giovacchini and especially Job Ruiz who has done the lion’s share of the work! THANK YOU!!!

Welcome new community garden members Ken Brown and Jewel, Alice Day and Suzanne Young! And welcome back all the returning members who are renewing their plots!

Sonoma Valley High School Senior Project: Ashley Wieckert has been hard at work on her project at the Garden Park. She is redesigning the Medicinal Herb Garden and sourcing new herbs to plant. Her work will be completed by the end of May. Come and see!

Building Projects Update: Our dedicated committee members have been hard at work with design plans for the ADA paths and parking area, as well as next years building of the new Education Center. We are working closely with the City of Sonoma and we expect the parking area construction will begin sometime in June or July. The paths are slated to go in this summer as well! Along the pathway will be the Children’s Discovery Trail activity stations. Our first station is slated to be installed by the end of July!

Special Thanks to the Sonoma Valley Community Center for their donation of the Metal Sculpture of three people holding hands in a circle! It is a welcome addition to the spirit of community that the Garden Park strives to inspire!
