Mike Lipskin Trio Free Jazz Concert 7:30pm

SVVGA BeneficiaryPianist Mike Lipskin will perform a variety of musical gems in the Harlem Stride jazz piano style in a free concert by the Mike Lipskin Trio, along with jazz vocalist Dinah Lee and Jerry Logas on saxophone, at the Sonoma Community Center’s Open House on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Stride Jazz Piano, which flourished during the rich era of music in the 1920s, is the sound of Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Duke Ellington, and Art Tatum.

Lipskin has played Carnegie Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, and Newport Jazz Festival. He appears in the jazz documentary film, “A Great Day In Harlem,” nominated for an academy award. He was music director for, and performed in, five “Stride Summit” concerts at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall and Masonic Auditorium. Lipskin has five recordings to his credit and is working on his next project for Buskirk Records.

In the words of the Los Angeles Times jazz critic, Leonard Feather, “Lipskin displays the virtues of technique, soul, freshness, and the spirit of youth in his flawless interpretations of Stride pieces.” The legendary record producer, Jerry Wexler adds, “He’s fantastic ’cause first of all, he’s got chops, he doesn’t fumble, he’s got that stride thing.”

Annual Free Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving 2
FEAST WITH US!  It’s time for the Sonoma Community Center’s free annual Thanksgiving celebration!  This perennial favorite gets better each year.  As is the custom, the dinner is free and open to all.

Thanksgiving features Slow Food guru Gary Edwards in Top Toque position.  This year, he is assisted by Greg Silvi of Gourmet Magazine fame.

There are volunteering opportunities for food prep helpers, decorating and serving/cleanup. There is also a need for financial supporters to help us make this gathering the best yet!

Santa’s Visit

Santa
Santa heads to the Sonoma Community Center directly after lighting up City Hall!  Every year, Santa Claus rides on a vintage fire truck to the Sonoma Plaza, lights up the Christmas tree and City Hall, and passes out candy canes to tots. Immediately following the 6 p.m. lighting ceremony, Santa will come to the Community Center to take photos with children.

There will be music, warm cider, snacks and cookies, beverages for adults, and craft projects for children. A new Sonoma tradition that’s fun for the whole family!

Photos charged separately. Entrance and snacks are free.
