Percy Schmeiser, Non GMO Farmer returns to Sonoma

Schmeiser pleased with victory over Monsanto

After a long and intense 10 year legal battle, in an out of court settlement finalized on March 19, 2008, Percy Schmeiser has settled his lawsuit with Monsanto. Monsanto has agreed to pay all the clean-up costs of the Roundup Ready canola that contaminated Schmeiser’s fields. The issue revolves around unwanted Roundup Ready canola plants that arrived on Schmeiser’s fields. Monsanto refused to reimburse or compensate Schmeiser for this contamination unless he signed an agreement to not speak publically on the matter and that he would never sue Monsanto for contamination. A significant part of the agreement is that there was no gag-order imposed on the settlement and that Monsanto could be sued again if further contamination occurred. Schmeiser believes this precedent setting agreement ensures that farmers will be entitled to reimbursement when their fields become contaminated with unwanted Roundup Ready canola or any other unwanted GMO plants. “In an indirect way, Monsanto has acknowledged liability for the contamination of a field by the unwanted appearance of its genetically altered product,” stated Schmeiser in reaction to the settlement.”

Sheana Davis, The EPicurean Connection has hosted Percy Schmeiser 4 times over 9 years in Sonoma and the bay area, including Berkeley, San Francisco, Manchester, Ukiah and Santa Rosa. It is with great pleasure to host Percy and his wife Louise to Sonoma and celebrate the success of his legal challenges against Monsanto.

this event should not go unnoticed or underestimated!

the heroic battle waged by the schmeisers is nothing less than david and goliath in a modern world where goliath all too often triumphs. the model and success of their endeavors are an encouragement to everyone who may be at odds with a corporation of any kind. HUGE kudos to sheana for hosting the smysers again and again and otherwise being a consistent builder of [sustainable/organic/tasty/groovy] community.

and many thanks to mr. and mrs. schmeiser for proving that perseverance is indeed omnipotent: through their tireless efforts, we all know much more about gmo’s, the business practices behind them, the devastating outcomes of such practices, and how we can manage sustainable alternatives.
