Exhibition at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art
551 Broadway, Sonoma
Sep 04 – Oct 18, 2008

presented by the Sonoma Community Center
with the support of the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art

Inside the Springs was generously funded by Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Alliance, Sonoma Valley Fund, Vineyard Worker Services, Ross Drulis Cusenbery, Mikell Smith, Eileen Adams, Elizabeth Smith, Arroyo Veterinary Hospital, and many, many other contributors. It took a community of support to present this exhibition. Springs’ businesses offered their sites as our exhibition walls and Sonoma Valley Museum of Art provided gallery space.  Special thanks to Vineyard Worker Services which helped fund the project and gave Wing an introduction to the neighborhood.  La Luz Center and the VOM Teen Center also deserve credit for their invaluable help.

Learn how to find, identify, and even age local shorebirds on migration! Lisa Hug is offering two lectures – one featuring the shorebirds that use the coastal beaches and marshes as their primary migration route, and the other featuring the shorebirds that favor the inland marshes.

The lecture material will be reinforced during the Bodega Bay and Schollenberger Park field exercises. Participate in either the Friday or Saturday exercise; whichever best fits into your schedule!

Bring binoculars, pen, and notebook to the lectures.  Bring water, snacks, layered clothing, field guide(s), binoculars, and spotting scope (optional) to each field exercise.

Lisa Hug is a freelance naturalist and contract biologist. She has been an Interpretive Ranger for Point Reyes National Seashore, and a research assistant with Point Reyes Bird Observatory and Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. She is past president of Redwood Region Ornithological Society.  She does regular pelagic trips as a co-leader for Shearwater Journeys and as a researcher for the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

Battle of the Bandsbattle of the bands
Sonoma Plaza Amphitheater
Saturday, August 23
10:30am to 5:00 pm

Focused on emerging teen musicians, the “battle” is the brainchild of local business owner Michael Halem.  As the leader of popular Bay Area band Crossfire, he became acutely aware that there were not a lot of venues for young aspiring musicians to perform and receive feedback. Partnering with SCC, Halem has developed a line-up of ten bands that will vie for money and trophy awards to the top three selected by a jury of Sonoma County musician judges.  Judges include Halem; drummer and recording studio owner Jesse Kramer; Agent and Flaming Hotel booking coordinator Robert Dixon;  Zone Music owner Frank Hayhurst; Gator Beat guitarist Randy Quan; keyboardist and recording engineer Athan Pasadis; guitarist and entertainment editor of Sonoma Sun Jim Barrie; and leader of the Jami Jamerson Band Dennis Cordello.

Battle of the Bands sponsors are Sonoma Community Center, Michael Halem, and Zone Music.

The event is free to the public.
