What’s Growing On?

Fruit tree pruning is in full force from now through Feb 14th, when we switch gears and start propagating plants for the spring and summer seasons. In fact, it already feels like spring at Sonoma Garden Park! January was a fantastic month for the garden, and it was great to see so much support on Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend. We had almost 30 volunteers thanks to Sonoma Community Action Network (CAN).

Also, note our new volunteer hours, which are: Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Saturday’s from 9-2. Come on out and lend a hand. Snacks provided. This Tuesday, Feb 10th, along with the Master Gardeners, we will be pruning fruit trees in the garden, and you are welcome to join us for some hands-on practice.


Grafting Workshop

Sat., February 28th, 1:00-3:00 pm.

Tommy Perot, a sophomore at Sonoma Valley High School, will facilitate this hands-on class and demonstrate how to grow several varieties of delicious fruit on a single tree. Tommy is a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers Association and has been studying exotic and rare fruit growing for the past 5 years.

Growing Summer Vegetables

Sat., March 21st 10:30 am Master Gardener Patty Ekenberg will talk about how to grow summer vegetables.

Classes are sponored by the Sonoma Master Gardeners, free of charge, and held at the Sonoma Valley Regional Library, 755 W. Napa Street. For more information call the Sonoma County Master Gardener offices at 938.0127 or 565.2608 or visit www.sonomamastergardeners.org


Sonoma Garden Park CSA

The Sonoma Garden Park is returning to its roots by offering community members a chance to be a part of our CSA. Community Supported Agriculture is a way for people to directly support a local farm while receiving a weekly supply of fresh, local, and sustainably grown produce. The Sonoma Garden Park CSA will include a weekly bag full of both fruit and veggies, with an option for flowers, to be picked-up on site for the duration of our harvest season. And instead of the traditional CSA newsletter, we have a blog that will be updated weekly with recipes and a list of the week’s produce from the garden.

Water Wisdom Workshop

Sat., February 21st, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Sonoma Veterans Memroial Hall

Join the Sonoma Ecology Center, the City of Sonoma, and parterning agencies for a free workshop to learn more about current water issues, and what you can do to help conserve water. There will be great speakers, hands-on demonstrations, and vendor booths for you to check out!

Monthly Recipe: Aunt Roxanne’s Sauteed Brussel Sprouts

Ingredients:
1 lb Brussels sprouts, washed, dried and sliced in half
3 shallots, finely sliced

Olive Oil
Aged Balsamic Vineger
Sea salt
Fresh ground pepper

Preparation:
Using a skillet, heat a few teaspoons of olive oil on medium heat. Add shallots and cook for a few minutes until they are transparent. Then add the sliced Brussels sprouts and saute them until they start to turn from a vibrant green to a yellowish color. Drizzle some aged balsamic vinegar over the Brussles sprouts, and finish sauteeing them until they are golden brown and begin to crisp on the edges. Add sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Serve warm and enjoy!

The Sonoma Garden Park is home to 22 community garden plots. Our annual renewal will begin in March, and we may have a few additional plots this year. Some of the benefits of having a community garden plot are: use of garden tools, compost, mulch, water, and a fantastic community of friends! You also get to come out and enjoy the beautiful Sonoma Garden Park whenever you want!
