Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of
the beliefs – and becoming who you are.

On Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., March 22^nd , Readers’ Books welcomes back San Francisco’s legendary writer and teacher, *Adair Lara*, to discuss her latest book, /Naked, Drunk, and Writing: Writing Essays and Memoirs for Love and for Money./*//*

*/ /*

Lara has shepherded many talented young writers into the publishing world, including Janis Newman, Lolly Winston and Jacqueline Winspear (author of the popular Maisie Dobbs mystery series) among others.

In* */Naked, Drunk, and Writing /she tackles all the problems, anxieties and questions budding writers have pondered from time immemorial. How do I know where to start, and where to end? How do I know when I need more detail and when less? How do I keep writing when I know it’s crap? Why would anybody care about this?

If you are a writer or ever thought about writing, or someone who just enjoys reading an elegant sentence now and then, come join us for a delightful afternoon with one of California’s most insightful, witty and humorous human beings.

Readers’ Books is located at 130 East Napa Street, Sonoma. For more information call 707-939-1779 or email us at info@readersbooks.com .

On Tuesday, March 24^th , Readers’ Books will host an evening with *Raphael Cushnir* to celebrate the publication of his latest book, /The One Thing Holding You Back: Unleashing the Power of Emotional Connection./*//*

*/ /*

Most people have a vision of their lives that they’re not pursuing, or they are only pursuing half-heartedly, or they are pursuing it with all their might and yet still falling short. This vision can be modest or grand. It may involve breaking free of a destructive habit or finding a truly healthy relationship. It might have to do with making a real difference in the world. Whatever the quest, in /The One Thing Holding You Back /Raphael Cushnir, a leading voice in the field of personal and professional development, reveals that whenever people aren’t living their dreams it’s because they are not yet willing or able to feel specific emotions related to those dreams. Once we access and understand these emotions our dreams can and will come true.

Cushnir has shared his unique approach to personal growth and fulfillment with millions of readers of /O/ magazine, /beliefnet/* *and /Spirituality and Health/. He is the author of three previous books, lectures worldwide, and is a faculty member of the Esalen Institute, the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, and the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. In addition, he coaches individuals and teams at Fortune 100 companies, governmental offices, religious organizations, and leading nonprofits.

Raphael Cushnir’s talk begins at 7:30 p.m. and the public is cordially invited. Readers’ Books is located at 130 East Napa Street, Sonoma. For more information call 707-939-1779 or go to http://www.readersbooks.com.

On Thursday night, March 26^th , at 7:30 p.m., Readers’ Books and the Sonoma Community Center will co-host a special evening to celebrate *Nafisa Haji *and her debut novel, /The Writing on My Forehead/ at Andrews Hall.

Nafisa Haji is an American of Indo-Pakistani descent and she now lives in northern California. Her novel, which has attracted nation-wide attention, concerns the yearnings of a young girl for freedom and meaning of family, tradition, and the ties that bind.

Khaled Hosseini, author of /The Kite Runner/ and /A Thousand Splendid Suns/, has called Haji’s book “lyrical and touching. It is a story of mother and daughters, and a story of a young Muslim woman at the crossroads, shaped by the forces of her past, her religion, her roots, her culture, and her own determined will.”

Join us at the Sonoma Community Center, 276 East Napa Street, in Sonoma, for what will surely be a memorable tour of the foreign and the familiar.

This event is part of the Sonoma Arts + Lectures Series . Andrews Hall is at 276 E. Napa St. Tickets are $15, available at Readers’ Books or The Sonoma Community Center. For more information call 707-939-1779 or email us at info@readersbooks.com.

PERUVIAN SOUND HEALING CEREMONY – 3/24/09

PERUVIAN SOUND HEALING CEREMONY

Tuesday March 24   6:30 to 8:30 pm

Peruvian Whistling Vessels Ceremony with Margy Henderson

Peruvian Whistling Vessels Ceremony with Margy Henderson

Margy Henderson invites you to experience the healing effect of a rare replica set of Peruvian Whistling Vessels. When 8 people blow the Whistles the feeling is balancing, entrancing, and joyous. Find out more about these wonderful healing instruments.  Shamans used ancient whistling vessels in their rituals and sound healing work. They create ‘binearal beats’ which bring about specific, very helpful physiological and spiritual balance.
You are invited to join  in the fun:
8 to 11 people get together. Margy gives a brief introduction and explanation. A relaxed and enjoyable ritual circle is opened. It requires no experience or skill as all the 8 Whistles are blown together.  This stimulates an otherwise unused part of the ear to create healing sounds. Binearal beats balance the left/right hemispheres of the brain, as well as sodium/potassium levels in the body. Trance states, deep relaxation, and insights are often reported.
Ritual sound healing session:
location: 945A West Spain, Sonoma (come through the carport to house in back)
RSVP: email planetsounds@sbcglobal.net or call 707-938-8334
Donation requested: $10 to $20

Experience Healing Modalities at the Open House on March 21 FREE

Hey, friends.
The wonderful healers who are opening their office for this event are letting people in to experience their various methods, many not available anywhere else.

Silvia Cloe has a hyperbaric chamber, used to get oxygen deeply into the body and brain. I have been lucky enough to try it.

Libby Roberts is  VERY gifted Feldenkrais teacher who does popular classes at Parkpoint.

Jane Ellen Heath is an MD who uses Homeopathy and teaches workshops.

They invited me to do toning tune-ups at the open house.
I hope people will drop by and meet these terrific women, play with their diagnostic machines, biofeedback, and, my favorite, the Hyperbaric chamber for oxygen therapy!

Stephen Mitchell and his new book: The Second Book of the Tao – March 5th – Reader’s Books

Thursday, March 5, 7:30 p.m. *Stephen Mitchell *will present his new book, “The Second Book of the Tao,” at Readers’ Books, 130 E. Napa St., Sonoma. For more information call 707-939-1779./ / / /

On Thursday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., Readers’ Books will welcome back Stephen Mitchell to talk about his new work, “The Second Book of the Tao.” Mitchell is well-known for his translations and reworking of classic texts. His previous books, the “Tao Te Ching,” “The Gospel According to Jesus,” “Genesis” the “Bhagavad Gita,” “The Book of Job,” and “Gilgamesh,” among others, have earned him a special place of honor in that small pantheon of individuals who try to tease out the real meaning of literature and philosophy. / / / /

“The Second Book of the Tao” represents a bit of a departure. It is a twenty-first century form of ancient wisdom, bringing a new homemade sequel to the “Tao Te Ching” into the modern world. Mitchell introduces us to a cast of vivid characters, most of them humble artisans or servants, who show us precisely what it means to be in harmony with the way things are. His meditations and risky reimagining of the original texts are brilliant and liberating, not least because they catch us off-guard, opening up the heavens where before we saw only a roof./ / / /

Stephen Mitchell’s talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. and it is free and open to the public. Readers’ Books is located at 130 East Napa Street, Sonoma. For more information call 707-939-1779. / — Lilla G. Weinberger Readers’ Books 130 E. Napa St. Sonoma, CA 95476 (707) 939-1779

What’s Growing On?

mutsu_toa.jpg

Fruit tree pruning is in full force from now through Feb 14th, when we switch gears and start propagating plants for the spring and summer seasons. In fact, it already feels like spring at Sonoma Garden Park! January was a fantastic month for the garden, and it was great to see so much support on Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend. We had almost 30 volunteers thanks to Sonoma Community Action Network (CAN).

Also, note our new volunteer hours, which are: Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Saturday’s from 9-2. Come on out and lend a hand. Snacks provided. This Tuesday, Feb 10th, along with the Master Gardeners, we will be pruning fruit trees in the garden, and you are welcome to join us for some hands-on practice.

Grafting Workshop

Sat., February 28th, 1:00-3:00 pm.

Tommy Perot, a sophomore at Sonoma Valley High School, will facilitate this hands-on class and demonstrate how to grow several varieties of delicious fruit on a single tree. Tommy is a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers Association and has been studying exotic and rare fruit growing for the past 5 years.

The workshop fee is $25. To sign up, or for more information, contact Jessica Glatt at 707.996.0712 ext. 108, or email: jessica@sonomaecologycenter.org

Growing Summer Vegetables

Sat., March 21st 10:30 am Master Gardener Patty Ekenberg will talk about how to grow summer vegetables.

Classes are sponored by the Sonoma Master Gardeners, free of charge, and held at the Sonoma Valley Regional Library, 755 W. Napa Street. For more information call the Sonoma County Master Gardener offices at 938.0127 or 565.2608 or visit www.sonomamastergardeners.org

Sonoma Garden Park CSA

The Sonoma Garden Park is returning to its roots by offering community members a chance to be a part of our CSA. Community Supported Agriculture is a way for people to directly support a local farm while receiving a weekly supply of fresh, local, and sustainably grown produce. The Sonoma Garden Park CSA will include a weekly bag full of both fruit and veggies, with an option for flowers, to be picked-up on site for the duration of our harvest season. And instead of the traditional CSA newsletter, we have a blog that will be updated weekly with recipes and a list of the week’s produce from the garden.

For more information, or an application, either stop by Sonoma Garden Park during our volunteer hours to talk to Rebecca, or contact Jessica Glatt at 707.996.0712 ext. 108, or email jessica@sonomaecologycenter.org. Membership is limited, so if you are interested, apply soon!

Water Wisdom Workshop

Sat., February 21st, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Sonoma Veterans Memroial Hall

Join the Sonoma Ecology Center, the City of Sonoma, and parterning agencies for a free workshop to learn more about current water issues, and what you can do to help conserve water. There will be great speakers, hands-on demonstrations, and vendor booths for you to check out!

For more information call Wendy Atkins at 707.933.2204, or email: wendya@sonomacity.org

Stay Tuned – Sonoma Garden Park will be hosting a 4 week water conservation educational series in the month of March. Additional information to follow.
For more information, contact Jessica Glatt at 707.996.0712 ext. 108 or email: jessica@sonomaecologycenter.org

Monthly Recipe: Aunt Roxanne’s Sauteed Brussel Sprouts

Ingredients:
1 lb Brussels sprouts, washed, dried and sliced in half
3 shallots, finely sliced

Olive Oil
Aged Balsamic Vineger
Sea salt
Fresh ground pepper

Preparation:
Using a skillet, heat a few teaspoons of olive oil on medium heat. Add shallots and cook for a few minutes until they are transparent. Then add the sliced Brussels sprouts and saute them until they start to turn from a vibrant green to a yellowish color. Drizzle some aged balsamic vinegar over the Brussles sprouts, and finish sauteeing them until they are golden brown and begin to crisp on the edges. Add sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Serve warm and enjoy!

Interested In a Community Garden Plot?

The Sonoma Garden Park is home to 22 community garden plots. Our annual renewal will begin in March, and we may have a few additional plots this year. Some of the benefits of having a community garden plot are: use of garden tools, compost, mulch, water, and a fantastic community of friends! You also get to come out and enjoy the beautiful Sonoma Garden Park whenever you want!

For information about the Community Garden Plot program, contact Jessica Glatt at 707.996.0712 ext.108, or email: jessica@sonomaecologycenter.org

Sonoma Garden Park is an educational community farm and garden managed by the Sonoma Ecology Center. Our address is 19990 7th Street East between MacArthur and Denmark.
